Rock & Republic and Bankruptcy Protection?

Rock & Republic, the fashion brand known for its pricey designer denim and other apparel, said Thursday that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The Culver City company, whose products are sold in upscale department stores such as Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom as well as specialty retailers and its own free-standing stores, said the filing would ease pressure on its balance sheet. Day-to-day operations are expected to continue. The label hasn't been the picture of financial health for months. It canceled its fall 2010 Fashion Week show and slashed distribution of its makeup line.

"The Chapter 11 filing is a strategic action that will alleviate balance sheet burdens and enable us to adopt the financial and operational initiatives needed to support the brand's growth needs," said Geoffrey D. Lurie, the privately held company's newly named chief restructuring officer. "We are confident that this is the right move for Rock & Republic."

Lurie added that the company was exploring "financial relationships" and would sharpen its focus to emphasize its core apparel and footwear businesses.

Rock & Republic was founded in 2002 by Chief Executive Michael Ball and has become known for its edgy and sexy clothing, including premium jeans priced at $200 or more.

The bankruptcy petition was filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York. The company said it had obtained a commitment for a line of credit from CIT Group/Commercial Services Inc.

Not Only Does he Design for Chanel, Now its Coca-Cola

Coca enlisted the help of Karl Lagerfeld to design an aluminum Coca-Cola Light bottle. According to Highsnobiety, “The designer affixes his style and his famous silhouette on the bottle and delivers an exclusive creation with chic lines and also a unique box in limited edition, accompanied with a bottle-opener discreetly hidden in a drawer.” Assuming this isn’t an April Fools’ joke, they’ll be available from April 24th at colette.

Who says Kelly needs Bravo anyway?

Alrighty so in recent gossip, its said that Bravo is undecided on a second season of Kelly Cutrone's reality series, Kell on Earth. The indecisiveness is still uncertain why; but from what's been in recent news, Ms. Cutrone has already signed "a major deal in L.A. last week for a scripted network TV show," PRNewser reports:
"I'm going to be executive producing and writing" she said. The show will be about the fashion industry. Cutrone will also be executive producing two other reality shows and will continue to appear on MTV's "The City," which returns on April 27th.

So let's count, that's one, two, three...three scripted shows without Kell on Earth. So from the looks of it, Ms. Cutrone does not NEED her Bravo show becuase there are plenty more in the making.

Personally, I like Kell on Earth and I hope they chose to have an additional season.

Here's more info if you want to read more about it:

Urban Outfitters' New Bridal Line

Yesterday Urban Outfitters Inc. unveiled record fourth-quarter results: a 91.6 percent increase in net income and a 15.8 percent increase in sales. Analysts would have a hard time laughing at a company with such impressive numbers, and so it was the perfect time for the retailer to reveal that its new company would be a bridal label.

Urban Outfitters has been on a roll lately. When you need something — a leather mini, tight pants, an ugly plaid flannel, pumps — Urban is there for you with expanded online offerings at prices you can afford. The wedding industry is a $60 billion one. Couple that with whatever the hipster fashion industry is worth and you've got a concept — bridesters! — that's sure to make Urban Inc. even wealthier and more irresistible than it already is.

Urban hasn't quite figured out what the new bridester business will encompass, but it will start online before the physical stores open. The gowns — or perhaps wedding-white jeggings — will be made under the Anthropologie label, and run from $1,000 to $5,000. Urban Inc.'s CEO says his bridal attire will be "heirlooms, to be passed on from one generation to the next," which is a great way to convince brides to purchase an exorbitantly priced dress they'll only have the chance to wear once.

Urban's bridester stuff will also include bridestermaids dresses, jewelry, accessories, shoes, invitations, and a bridal registry for gifts. They may also offer flowers, planning, and travel services, which may or may not include the bikes Urban now sells online, but with branded toilet paper trailing off the back.

Project Runway for Wii

AT some point during the fourth hour of playing a new video-game version of “Project Runway,” a sensation of nausea rolled in, like what happens when you finally pick your face up off the couch after a marathon viewing of the show.

“I liked it very much,” said the voice of Heidi Klum, who could find no wrong with the cartoon version of a model wearing a moss-colored knit dress with long sleeves and a block pattern, big gold hoops in her ears, mauve lipstick and, as a discreet touch of bling, a beret in the shape of a $. “I thought it was very chic.”

Chic? It was god-awful. But if this reporter — er, designer — has learned anything from watching seven seasons of the show, it is to always listen to Tim Gunn.

In the game, released this week for the Wii system, Mr. Gunn introduces each challenge (hip-hop couture, cutting-edge punk, cheerleader uniform) with a list of exactly what the judges want to see. It is the player’s job to sort through a virtual closet of items to locate and drag them onto the body of a model avatar.

Then it’s on to hair and makeup, using the wireless controller to apply blush and eyeliner. Chunky highlights? Check. Deep Blue Sea lipstick? Check. On the runway, you use the controllers to effect a perfect strut, blow kisses and strike poses; the judges respond with signature quips, which sound suspiciously like sound bites lifted from last season’s episodes.

The game, by the way, is targeted to girls ages 6 to 12 (and other fans of the show).

“Fashion is becoming one of the most powerful motivators for the teen and tween audiences,” said Jonathan Anastas, a vice president at Atari, which developed the game. “At the very least, we are giving an authentic expression of the runway experience.”

That depends on your experience. Since the virtual skimmy tops and skinny jeans are basically caricatures of designer clothes, the game starts to seem like a job at Forever 21. To win, you have to conform to the rules, which is an odd message from a show that encourages individual vision in a designer. So this one decided to throw it a challenge and see what would happen.

For a Harajuku look, a white shirt and silvery gray skirt were selected rather than the Victorian dress Mr. Gunn suggested.

“She just looks like tinfoil,” Michael Kors said.

At least the judges were paying attention.

Pushing the Petal: J. Crew Plans to Open its New All Male Store

In September 2010, J. Crew will be opening its fourth all men’s store. By doing so, J. Crew will be growing its men’s business. As of now J. Crew has three all men’s store; one on West Broadway in Tribeca, one at the Garden State Plaza in New Jersey, and one in Soho.
Expansion
The fourth J. Crew will be a 3,400 square foot store at 1020 Madison Ave and 79th street. According to WWD, the retailer is aggressively searching locations for additional units outside of Manhattan. Chief Executive of J. Crew Group Inc. Millard Drexler states, “It’s definitely a business now. It’s beyond the test phase.” He says this because according to the company’s accountant, men’s overall account for around a quarter percentage of the company’s $1.4 billion volume.
The Plan
Drexler states that, “the plan is not to open hundreds of stores in every mall location,” in its place the company is taking a “less is more approach.” In searching for locations for the new stores, the company wants high populations of “urban, sophisticated, fashionable and higher-income men who love fashion and love to looks good,” Drexler says. To achieve the success in opening the newest all men’s J. Crew, the company will make sure each store has its own personality. They will apply the same inspirations they gave the women’s store, to this men’s store. With hard work in designing and making sure this downtown store doesn’t look like one, but make it fit into the ambiance of an Upper East Side neighborhood, the J. Crew Group Inc. has a lot a head of them in order to succeed.

Sneak Peek! The Entire, 20-Look Jean Paul Gaultier For Target Line

About five months ago, people everywhere were so excited about the announcement of Jean Paul Gaultier line for target. We think great designer and affordable prices would be fab right? Well some people do not think that this collection is too fabulous. Personally, this lookbook is not as cohesive as i would like to to have been. There are some cute separates though, esp the swimsuits. The prices range from $17.99 - $199.00. The leather Jackets are the most expensive. It debuts stores on March 7, 2010. Can't wait to see how well it does!

Rest In Peace Alexander Mcqueen

In sad news, one of the fashion world’s favorite and top designers Alexander McQueen committed suicide. It’s shocking news as Fashion Week kicks off today and McQueen is indeed a celebrity favorite and a fashion world favorite.

The fashion editor who discovered him, and who became his close friend, committed suicide as well back in 2007. And his mother just died a few days ago. Such sad news and for such a talented person who quickly became a British fashion icon and an American favorite as well.

According to reports:

McQueen was found at his luxury flat in Green Park, central London. It is believed he hanged himself.

A source at McQueen’s office this afternoon confirmed his death, saying: ‘It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.’

His death comes just days before the start of London Fashion Week and weeks before he was due to unveil his new collection at Paris Fashion Week on March 9.

Fashion For Haiti From Naomi!

The supermodel is planning a series of fashion shows to benefit the victims of the Haitian earthquake, including one during New York Fashion Week on Feb. 12. She has been rounding up looks from fashion designers to be worn by celebrities at the runway event and then auctioned to raise more funds. Asked which designers she had called, Ms. Campbell replied succinctly.

“All of them,” she said.

Ms. Campbell has been organizing such shows under the name Fashion for Relief since 2005, raising funds through auctions in response to tragedies like Hurricane Katrina and the Mumbai terrorist attacks, though it has been several years since she brought the show to New York.

In a subtle pitch, Ms. Campbell noted that it will be a rare chance for people to see the Bryant Park tents in person, since the shows that begin next week will be the last held there before Fashion Week moves to Lincoln Center in September.

“It’s not your typical runway show,” she said. “Having the public be in the audience is much more fun. They are the ones who are not usually allowed in the shows.”

When Ms. Campbell, who had already announced a similar event in London, proposed having another show in New York, the calendar was already full. But the designer Charlotte Ronson agreed to move her show to accommodate the event. IMG, which produces the shows in Bryant Park, agreed to help with models, and Ms. Campbell is calling on several celebrities to appear. She has also arranged for the clothes to be auctioned at Net-a-porter.com next month.

“It’s the world that I am in,” she said. “Fashion is what I know and what I have loved for 25 years. It’s great that you are seeing actors coming together and singers coming together, but this is our way of coming together and giving a contribution.”

Tickets for the show will go on sale first to American Express cardholders on Feb. 5, for $100 or $150, through Ticketmaster.com. The ticket sales alone are expected to raise $100,000 for the charities connected to Fashion for Relief, said Jessica Igoe, the director of global sponsorship marketing for American Express.
